The Downfall Of Society!
Climber and I were going to lunch the other day, when I noticed that he was being very quiet. He is normally a quiet person, but this was quiet even for him.
I asked what was up, and he said he was just thinking. After a little more prodding, he started in.
The upshot was that he was concerned for the future of this country. Now he and I have had political discussions before, and while we are both fairly centralist, he leans a little more the liberal way, and I lean a little more the conservative way. We both cross the lines on certain issues.
This was more of a social discussion than a political one, however. He rambled on about how the children of the "Me" generation were growing up, and would soon be assuming positions of power. He refers to them as the "I" generation. Completely self absorbed, completely tuned out to the world around them, and not very concerned about anyone but themselves.
They are the ones that will sit with a group of people, and instead of joining the conversation will listen to an IPOD. They will have a "private" conversation on a cell phone in a public place, and have absolutely no manners with regards to other people.
I was reminded of an essay I wrote for a college class one time. It was about how technology was slowly eroding the interpersonal skills of society today. Instead of calling someone, we e-mail, instead of walking into a place of business to apply for a job, we post a resume. We fax/text/e-mail/instant message other people so much, that we never talk to them. We are losing the ability to communicate face to face.
There are times I long for the days of sitting on a porch, and talking to the neighbors as the went for an evening stroll. I sometimes think that the world would be a better place if it was still this way.
Granted, I would not be writing this blog if that were the case, and I would have never developed a quasi relationship with some of the people that I have.
I hope that time will prove that the pros out-weigh the cons, and that we are not taking to big of a step back. Only time will tell.
